Stayed with Cheryl and her family. While there, I attended her brother’s wedding, went to Vietnam, and went to Singapores’ famous Zoo, Night Safari, and Sentosa. In Hanoi, Vietnam, ate local Vietnamese food, shopped, and went to Halong bay, a beautiful world heritage place. In Halong bay, spent 2 nights staying on a junk boat and went cave trekking. Definitely a one-of-a-kind experience!

Camden Stint Over

I finished my last exam on Wednesday and no more lectures ever. Woo hoo!! Will be starting my yearlong clinical rotations in January 2008. Thought I’d give a recap of all what I did and learned at Camden this past semester. In addition to lectures on ruminants (cattle, and sheep), pigs, poultry, horses, and pocket pets, I participated in weekly prac classes. Some of the cooler stuff I learned included pregnancy testing in cows (you have to stick you whole arm up the bum of a cow in case you were wondering…); giving an epidural to a cow; learning how to do a necropsy to investigate cause of death or disease (human equivalent of autopsy); equine anaesthesia and dentistry.

Of all my classes, I really enjoyed equine lectures and practicals the best. Some of my favourite pracs included learning how to float horse teeth (you have to use these giant-like nail files and rasp the teeth to remove the sharp edges); performing an ophthalmic examination (which I had to give a nerve block first to prevent sensation and keep the eyelid open…); and equine anaesthesia. In equine anaesthesia, I was the closest to guess the horse’s weight so I got to put in the jugular catheter. Before I could do this, I had to first inject local anaesthetic into the skin just over the jugular vein. Then, I had to insert this really long catheter (about 6 inches long) into the jugular vein. I was nervous and excited at the same time, but my prof was there talking to me the whole time. Later we used the jugular catheter to insert various drugs to make the horse lose consciousness like if you were to do in the field for surgeries etc. And, wow what an amazing experience watching this huge beautiful creature fall gracefully to the ground in 3 mins!

Winter Break

What have I been doing on my winter break …hmmm saw Shrek the 3rd captioned last week (really enjoyed it even though it’s kids movie); went to CartAtak (go cart racing for Sonic deaf youth group); and been doing lots of cooking/baking. For 4th of July, my roomie and I made fried okra and pickles. They came out surprisingly well. :) We did get a lot of curious stares while cooking in the communal kitchen though! Today, my friends and I all went to Luna Park in Sydney. It was like a peewee sized version of The Texas State Fair. No funnel cakes (my fav) unfortunately, but we did manage to find those fake diamond rings that you suck on that I used to have when I was a kid. We rode one ride call the “Tumble Bug,” but I think “Tummy bug” probably would have been more appropriate. Lol, brought back a lot of summer memories that David and I spent at Astroworld!

End of semester

I finished my final exams yesterday. Woo hoo! Just glad that they’re over with, so I can come out of my lil hole and rejoin society! Lol! It’s a beautiful day too unlike the cold and rainy days we’ve had for the past 2 weeks. Took Buster this morning for a much deserved run in the park. (He quit licking his arm compulsively now that I’m done with exams too—poor guy!) He had so much fun and managed to find a big pile of mud to run through! Checked out the swans in the park and their babies are all accounted for and getting bigger each day. By the way, my essay that I wrote last year for animal behaviour has been published in the June 2007 edition of “The Veterinarian.” Very cool huh! J Well, that’s about it for now—gonna relax now for the next couple of weeks before my big move to Camden farm.

4th Year Update

A post from me is long overdue. In case you didn’t know, I am now in the last part of my first semester of 4th year. It has been a very exciting and hectic semester. The days and the weeks just fly by! I’m really enjoying all my classes—even radiology too! Lol. My favourite days are surgery prac days. It seems to come more natural to me and it’s a nice break from lectures! Today I did a gastrotomy (cutting into the stomach as if to retrieve a swallowed foreign object); and a gastropexy (suturing part of the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent rotation of the stomach) which sometimes happens in large breed dogs. I also practiced taking intestinal biopsies as well as suturing two ends of intestine together. A little bit stinky but fun fun! Oh and I did a special kind of fracture repair yesterday on the back leg of a dog with external fixators. (Those are the kind of fractures you sometimes see people walking around with all those pins and bars sticking out of their legs, arms or even the head.) Ok, I better wrap this up in case I’m boring anyone to tears!

Oz/Sugar Land Recap

I figured a post was long over due and I’d give a recap of my happenings. Mom came to Sydney and spent a month with me. We celebrated New Year’s at Taronga Zoo and watched the fireworks over Sydney Harbour. We had a lovely picnic dinner and donned our festive glow-in-the-dark jewellery. For her Birthday, I took her to her favourite beach—Manly and we had steak and wine. In the month that she was in Sydney, the days were filled with lots of walking, talking, laughter, shopping, gelato, and eating! The highlight of the trip was when we spent a week in Cairns. In Cairns, we went on day cruise, saw the Great Barrier Reef, walked in the rain forest, and went to a rainforest village called Karrunda. The day in Karrunda began with a scenic train ride to the village that overlooked waterfalls, and the city of Cairns. At Karrunda, we spent most of our time in Bird World where these beautiful exotic birds would eat out of our hands. At the end of the day, we rode a sky rail over the rain forest canopies. The views were just spectacular!!

Now, I’m back in Sugar Land and hope to see friends and family before going back to uni on the 25th of February. Will be entering my 4th year! Woo hoo!

Surprise Visitors

I was just about to leave for the grocery store when lo and behold look what landed in our balcony! It became obvious once we got there that we had made a mistake—we were the only ones NOT wearing black, studded jewellery nor spiky hair. Turns out it was “goth night.” Lol. Since it took us 30 mins to get there by bus and walking, we decided to stay & make the most of it. Every time we go out, it’s always an adventure!

On Tuesday night, Cheryl and I had an early Christmas dinner before she left for home. We made turkey with stuffing, sweet potatoes, veggies, rolls—the works. Yummy! Now it’s just me, Buster, and a lot of leftovers. We miss Cheryl already!

Last night, Buster and I were waiting at the light & we witnessed this middle-aged lady get hit by a car. Instead of waiting for the cross walk, she ran across the road with shopping bags in hand in attempts to beat oncoming traffic. The guy hit her leg and she fell to the ground. Very traumatic experience, but fortunately, she pulled herself up and was able to walk again. I was surprised that no one bothered to call the police or an ambulance. To everyone out there: please slow down your lives a little & try to be a little more patient. Life is precious, don’t rush it.

Today, Buster and I have been kind of mopey around the house, so I decided to take him to the park where we fed the ducks and these snakelike fish. Some kind of eels I think. We had fun watching the ducks swim after the bread pieces and the fish splashing water as they slapped their tails to keep the other fish away from their prized food!

Farmer Girl Evy

Ever since finishing my final exams about 3 weeks ago, I’ve been keeping busy completing the remainder of my practical work experience with large animals. I rode a 7 hour train followed by a 1.5 hour bus ride and then a 1 hour car ride to a beef cattle property where I spent a week working with Angus cattle. My jobs included feeding, mustering, grooming, haltering, and doing the dishes. The family was very nice and the husband even had a hearing impairment so we got along really well! He asked me lots of questions about Texas and American history! Was funny because when he’d introduce me to people, he’d say “This is Evelyn, she’s a Texan, and deaf as post just like me!” Lol.

After spending a week with Angus cattle, I spent a week with dairy cattle (Holstein Friesians) only 3 hours from Sydney. The dairy was part of a small agricultural college. Rented a car and dragged Cheryl & Buster with me to keep me company out in the country. The first night, we stayed in a hole in the wall place that looked like one of those places that you rent by the hour…got eaten alive by mosquitos that night. After spending one night there, we ended up spending the remainder of the week at the college student housing. My main jobs at the dairy included feeding, teaching the calves how to drink milk from a bucket, mustering, & lots of milking!! Also did some ear tagging. I liked mustering because I’d get to use a 4 wheeler (or a quad as it is called here) to herd about 200 cows from the paddocks into the milking barn. To teach calves how to drink from a bucket, I’d stick my fingers in their mouth to get the sucking action going & then slowly bring their heads down into the bucket of milk and let them suck the milk & eventually removing my fingers. Once the milk is gone, the calves will try to head butt your crotch or your bum so they can get more milk which can give you quite a shock if you’re not expecting it! Was an exhausting 2 weeks of prac work, but had fun!

Recap of the Past Few Weeks

It’s been ages since I’ve updated my blog. Even did some reading outside while Buster chomped away on a tree branch. (I’m a bad mom I know, but it’s better than him chewing on his arm!) Btw, Buster totally embarrassed me Wednesday morning. During radiology lectures, he decided to expel his anal glands followed by profuse licking, and burping sounds. And, once a couple of weeks ago, while chatting with one of my professors, Buster started humping the air in between the two of us. I was mortified. Gotta get that dog a girlfriend! Yesterday, I caught up with one of my professors from first year anatomy. We had a nice chat. I still can’t believe how fast the years have gone by already! Gonna try to do something fun this weekend now that assessments have subsided for the time being.

Uni Life & Food

I’m in my third week of 2nd semester. I’m really enjoying it. Some of my classes include: Animal Disease, Veterinary Economics/Law (boring), Public Health (all the diseases that humans can get from animals--yikes), Intro to Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthesia, and Clinical Medicine. Oh, and my latest cooking repertoire now includes kangaroo steak, homemade chicken pot pie, and a few Asian dishes! I’m getting brave & creative in the kitchen now. Lol. Also, went out yesterday to celebrate Singapore National Day with Cheryl’s medical society. We ended up eating Malaysian food. I had a coconut drink that tasted like a snow cone and a milkshake (without the ice cream or milk) called chendol—was pretty good. Also went to a pub later that night but only had sprite because I don’t like beer and the bartenders didn’t know how to make any mixed drinks. Overall, it was a nice evening out away from the books.

Moving House

Yesterday afternoon, we finally moved out of our moldy and stinky house. I'm so relieved to be out of there. Now, we are living in a small but nice 2 bedroom apartment. The only smell now is that of fresh paint. It’s convenient now being so close to the grocery store and church. :) The move went relatively well except in the end when one of the movers (the owner) became very hot tempered because we didn't have exact change, wanted him to replace the dryer door that he broke, and he couldn't get out of our apartment building. I guess cheap service doesn't include common curtsey. Oh well. Just glad everything is done. Now all the unpacking begins.

Also, forgot to mention that I went to Coffs Harbour last week to attend Cheryl's tae kwon do tournament. I had fun watching all the competitors. One could feel the adrenaline in the air. I even found myself very nervous and excited when it came time for Cheryl's fight. Lol, now I know how my parents feel when they spent all those years watching us kids play in sports! ;)

After the tournament, we spent the remainder of the week sightseeing which included a banana plantation, candy maker, carob factory, clog barn, the butterfly house, and a trip to the BIG W. (It reminded me a lot of Wal-mart, but is actually a Woolworths instead.) It was a good relaxing week after final exams. :)

Finals

Studying for finals...got 8 of them--oy vey.

Last week of lectures & good news

This week was the last week of formal lectures before finals. The rain drops seemed to sparkle with sunlight and dance their way around me as they fell to the ground. In an instant, I was in another world.

Surprise 2: On another morning, I saw 10-15 Rainbow Lorikeets eating bread amongst 50 or so pigeons in the park. Their bright, beautiful, and small bodies were such a sharp contrast to the plump and poofy pigeons that normally feed in the park, and yet none of that seemed to matter…all of them ate peacefully.

Surprise 3: I got roses from by best friend for no reason at all. :) It’s been a good week. My main job was anaesthetist (very stressful) and monitoring post op recovery. Only poked myself once with a needle and all my patients survived surgery. Overall, got some good experience though. On my last night, I stayed by myself in Memphis, TN and saw a little bit of Graceland—the Elvis mansion, Heartbreak Hotel and rode in a pink pig limo to a restaurant called Marlowes and had some of their famous pork BBQ. This week, I also had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out. Now, I know how the animals must feel waking up from anaesthesia! I look like a blonde chipmunk now. The best news of the week is Buster is going back with me to Oz—woo hoo! (We had his blood retested and turns out it must have been a lab error!) Too cold and windy for sunbathing, but we still had a good time hanging out and talking about girly stuff. Today, I saw Firewall with my parents. We ended up getting free movie passes because it was supposed to be closed captioned with a rear window, but the theatre didn’t have all their equipment in yet. Btw, went on a date last night. It was supposed to be just coffee, but turned into dessert and drinks. We had a nice time and talked a lot about stuff that would be considered “taboo” on a first date! Lol. All of us had a really nice time. We dined at some of the favorite restaurants of UT students—Kerby Lane Café and Shady Grove. My favorite place that David took us to was a coffee shop on a big lake. It had this huge outdoor wrap around patio with old trees and an incredible view. Later that night, we went to a popular bar called the “Hole in the Wall” and it really was, but we still had a nice time listening to very loud music played by men in their 40’s, laughing, and kickin’ back a few drinks with my folks and David’s girlfriend, Katrina. Mom and us kids even had shots together. It sure was fun!

What kind of soul are you?

You Are a Prophet Soul

You are a gentle soul, with good intentions toward everyone.
Selfless and kind, you have great faith in people.
Sometimes this faith can lead to disappoinment in the long run.
No matter what, you deal with everything in a calm and balanced way.

You are a good interpreter, very sensitive, intuitive, caring, and gentle.
Concerned about the world, you are good at predicting people's feelings.
A seeker of wisdom, you are a life long learner looking for purpose and meaning.
You are a great thinker and communicator, but not necessarily a doer.

Souls you are most compatible with: Bright Star Soul and Dreaming Soul

What Kind of Soul Are You?

Strength in many forms

Someone told me yesterday that I was one of the strongest people they know. (I came home for Christmas/summer break and will be heading back to Oz on March 1st.) Since I’ve been home, I’ve been keeping busy catching up with family and friends, dog training, and preparing for my trip to Mississippi in February where I will be doing some veterinary volunteer experience with the Humane Society. I can’t wait.

Last weekend, a good friend came to visit me from L.A. We had a blast eating good Texas food, walking along the beach, watching movies, and chatting into the wee hours of the night.

Good News/Weekly Happenings

1. I’m still cringing over here.

School Field Trip

I went to Taronga zoo yesterday for my vet conservation biology class. Met up with the senior veterinarian and learned about reptilian and macropod management of Australian natives. They added a lot since my last visit when I first moved to Sydney. It ended up being a rainy day, but was better than being in lectures that’s for sure! Was a little embarrassed because the vet wanted to make sure he wouldn’t get electrocuted wearing my microphone in the rain!

Expect the Unexpected

This past week, I did my first vet exam on a horse. I honestly had no idea what I was doing and the horse knew it too! Listened to a bunch of heart, lung, and gut sounds…still hadn’t the foggiest idea. Then, my instructor came over to check up on me and chuckled and pointed out to me that my horse was getting aroused! No wonder why he kept trying to nip at me during the exam. Lol, guess my sexy womanly ways have that effect on men and animals too! ;)

This past weekend was my first weekend without any tests or assignments due on Monday. (Probably because the semester is about to end and finals are about to begin unfortunately.) Tonight I saw my first Japanese animae movie called Howl’s Moving Castle. To my surprise, I actually enjoyed it—it had its cute, funny, romantic, and just plain weird moments.

B-day and BBGrog

Well, I’m 25 years old today. Hard to believe. I feel so much older! Lol. Anyhow, it’s been a good weekend. Two of my friends abducted me yesterday afternoon, decorated my apartment, gave me cake and booze, and coerced me into going to the biggest vet keg of them all--BBGrog at Camden farms. It is an all night drinking, comedy, camping, dancing, and slight nudity affair put on by the 4th years. The highlight of the evening was the comedy revue featuring skits and songs poking fun at our professors, courses, and the trials and tribulations of just being a vet student. I think I may be slightly traumatised by all the raunchy photos though! Lol.

Spring Break Recap

Well, my spring break is sadly about to come to an end. Unfortunately, the majority of my break was spent studying for my upcoming equine anatomy exam and completing assignments. It was nice though not having to go to lectures and being able to sleep in a little. Buster sure enjoyed all of our trips to the park this past week. I even had brekkie in the park one morning, but it didn’t exactly go as I had planned…it ended up drizzling. We still had fun though and it turned out to be a beautiful day. Also did some spring cleaning because we were having apartment inspections this week. Gave me a good excuse to keep things neat and tidy. Hmm, let’s see how long it will stay that way. ;) Took Buster boy to the vet this week to get his yearly shots and get him prepped for the trip back home. He did well. He was just relieved that he didn’t have to get his blood drawn or his nails clipped! (Such a baby.) Oh, and it’s starting to get hot here now. I guess this means I have to start shaving again! The hot weather also brought in some un-invited guests and fortunately, I’m not arachnoid phobic because I killed this huge spider and when I squashed it, 20 or 30 baby spiders starting crawling out! I killed them too. Went grocery shopping last night and on my way, I passed by this couple passionately making out in the street as they said their good-byes. I couldn’t help but stare…and was even more shocked when they broke away and I saw that they were both women! Oh my! You never know what you’ll see in Newtown…

The Perfect Catch

Nope, haven’t landed my perfect catch yet (still waiting for him to fall out of the sky), but saw the movie yesterday with my friend Liv. We actually weren’t planning on seeing that one, but got it confused with 2 other movies that were playing that had the word “perfect” in it. Nevertheless, it ended up being a cute flick and reminded me of someone I know. We also walked around downtown in the rain (it seems to rain every time we get together) and I of course took Liv to my favourite pancake place. (She’d never been.) Was a real struggle trying to decide and I really wanted to indulge myself in the chocolate “devil’s delight” pancakes but wanted to try something new too. So, I ended up getting the banana pancakes with ice cream and butterscotch. They were yummy. In other news, thankfully, my family and friends managed to avoid the wrath of Rita. So, all is good on the home front. :)

Still Sick

I thought I was improving this week, but I’ve had a relapse, but worse this time. What initially started out as cold is now the flu I think. On a positive note, at least I’ve got Spring break to recover. Spoke to my mom today and it was quite distressing hearing about all the mayhem going on in the Houston area regarding the approaching hurricane Rita. My prayers and thoughts go out to all of my family and friends and those in need.

I survived

I was a little flustered though when I went to take my exam b/c there was mix up in the times. I got there at 8.30AM like I was told, but then no one was there. I was then instructed to go have a cup of tea and come back at 8.55. Came back later and then they had already started. Needless to say, don’t think I did very well. I need a brain transplant—I think there is something seriously wrong with mine…as I can’t seem to compete with those of my peers. My confidence is shot and once again, it will be a struggle to pass the semester. I’m also embarrassed b/c I was telling a friend at the vet clinic last week about all my problems with the videos being shown, group tutorials, prac classes, etc and she spoke to my year coordinator and she in turn spoke to my lecturer. My lecturer is hearing-impaired himself, but I feel that he doesn’t understand the depth of how difficult things are for me. He rarely repeats things and when I give him a blank stare back, it’s not because I wasn’t paying attention, but b/c I didn’t even know he was asking me a question in the first place. Ok, I’m through ranting and raving now. Gonna go have some grub now and maybe a whole box of cookies too.

Sick and Stressed

Sick and Stressed
I’m a nervous wreck about my pathology midterm exam tomorrow. I’ve been so sick and doped up on various meds these past few days. I pray that I can wake up in time for my exam early tomorrow morning! Gonna try to go to bed early…even drank some green tea this evening, which is supposed to help calm me, but weird that it seems to be having an opposite effect (interaction with drugs maybe??). Wish I would have known this sooner. Gotta make sure I bring toilet paper for the exam tomorrow! (I just hope all my nose blowing doesn’t lead to a nosebleed! Nothing new to report except starting to feel the pressure with approaching assignment/project deadlines and mid-semester exams. Took a break though from studying and saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the cinema with a classmate. The movie was great and had me laughing the whole time! The theatre was packed. Definitely not as many signing hands as I’m used to seeing at the captioned theatre back home. I remember in Houston, you’d go to a captioned movie, and everybody would congregate outside the theatre with flying hands everywhere before and after the movie even with complete strangers! Not quite like that here. I miss my best friend, but she’ll be back soon! I just know it. :) Btw, I think I should start my own community of Bilingual Deafies—a place where every fence straddler fits! No particular reason though. Today is Friday and I can’t believe how fast the week has flown by. Had so many pracs this week—a lot of them really interesting too. In principles of disease, we looked at all these animal organs with gross deformities and lesions caused by viruses, cancer, bacteria, etc. Was neat! And, today, in reproduction, had a wet prac on the male genitalia of the boar, stallion, and bull. My classmates were giving me a hard time with all the pictures I took. Looks like it is going to be a lot more interesting than last semester! I’m taking Veterinary Conservation Biology (Australian Wildlife Health Management), Principles of Disease, Anatomy and Physiology 2B (Reproduction), and Equine Anatomy. In equine anatomy, we will of course be dissecting the horse from head to toe throughout the semester. The horse cadavers are a little more freaky to work with than the other animals I’ve worked with because they occasionally move when you are working on them or you’d swear something was moving... (Their carcasses are suspended via bolts and chains from the ceiling.) Reproduction is already interesting too… Did you know that hyenas practice monogamy and that camels spend 24 hours copulating! (Of course, I remember the useless, but strange details!) Speaking of reproduction, I pity anyone who uses the computer lab for printing after me because they will end up printing multiple copies of the male dog’s genitalia. Instead, I somehow ended up printing someone else’s marine biology lecture notes… Fortunately, my new print cartridges arrived today so I won’t have to worry about using the computer lab anymore.

The Driving Lesson

Today, I met Max, Livia’s new car. Had an adventure today…I bravely supported, coached, and navigated Liv around the city to our final destination—Coogee Beach. She’s never driven in city traffic before. Using my navigation skills, I managed to keep us off of any freeways though.
It ended up being a beautiful sunny afternoon in Coogee. While we were walking around the cliffs of Coogee beach, we came across an area where an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in 2003. It touched me both on a personal and spiritual level given my mom’s successful surgery this weekend and the safe arrival of us in Coogee.
Yahoo Coogee Pics

A Trip to the City

Last night, I attended a dinner party hosted by one of my guy friends. Even went to the grocery store with him to buy all the ingredients for the dinner that he was planning for a group of us. And, then, to my surprise, one of the dinner guests arrived and went straight to work in the kitchen whipping up a nice meal for all 8 of us by herself! Don’t think Martha Stewart would have approved of this arrangement. I felt guilty and tried offering my help in the kitchen but was kicked out when I wasn’t chopping the parsley correctly.

This afternoon, I made a special trip to the city to visit the Sydney Jewish Museum. Learned about early Australian Jewish history. I was surprised to see that the early settlers of Australia (convicts) were sentenced to live in Australia for petty things like stealing a laundry basket full of clothes, panhandling, and even stealing a woman’s nightgown! The first floor of the museum was mostly about Jewish history and culture. Was neat because memories from my childhood would flood back as I passed by certain items like the torah, the Sabbath table, the Menorah, the Huppha etc.

The next couple of levels were all about the Holocaust from its beginnings to the end, the victims, and the survivors. I think the most difficult thing of it all for me to get through was browsing through the children’s memorial. They were so innocent and powerless and had not even lived their lives and it was all taken away from them for reasons they probably could not even comprehend. They and everyone else will always be remembered.

Tidbits

Yesterday, I saw the new Batman movie with my friend Erin and her husband. Feels great seeing a movie during the middle of the week! We all enjoyed the movie and had a nice time catching up with each other’s happenings over the break. Was a little weird at first because I kept picking up the Bewitched movie during the previews. (BTW, did you know that Nicole Kidman is an Australian?) Erin and I swapped stories about her latest interesting cases at work (she’s working as a veterinary nurse) and my trip to Fiji. She told me about this dog that was ill because he ate a rat that ate rat poison. Don’t worry, the dog lived! I told her how a rat got into our soup dinner.

Oh and a little political party trivia that I found out recently from an Aussie friend: Liberals are equivalent to U.S. Republicans and the Labour party is equivalent to the U.S. Democratic party. Went to church in the city and to my delight, the loop in the church was working this time and I was able to pick up the mass rather than the Presbyterian Church downstairs. After mass, I headed over to Circular Quay, picked some Macca’s (Aussie for Mc Donald’s) and ate my lunch on Sydney harbour while watching all the tourists and street performers. I even gave some money to some little boys who were playing a tuba and a trumpet to raise money to send their rugby team to New Zealand. I also went to the Contemporary Museum of Art—had a nice time browsing. Other people’s web blogs were even on display for people to browse through! Hmmm never thought of a blog as being a form of art.

Fairfield Ties

I saw Bewitched yesterday with Liv. Sometimes, I don’t understand why he allows such things to happen…

Grades are Out

I passed. The Dr. said that I had inherited the “gift” of having blood vessels close to the nasal surface. Hmmm that and hairy legs are gifts I could have done without inheriting! Although I hadn’t experienced any nosebleeds recently, he went ahead a cauterised the worst side. I became alarmed however when checking out that my nose started to bleed when I didn’t even have one to begin with when I first came in! Oy vey! I also had him check out my ears because I’d been experiencing some problems on the flight back to Sydney and didn’t seem to hear quite right. Turns out, I have a small haemorrhage on my malleus bone inside my ear, but it should heal on its own.

Mixed Emotions

Today I went to Cheryl’s uni graduation in W’Gong where she received a Master of Science in Biotechnology—you go girl, I'm proud of you! I would have screamed and hollered at the announcement of her name, but to my surprise, the Australian graduations are very prim and proper. More like the British system I guess. If I ever make it across the stage, I don’t care about being proper, I want all the whoops and whistles!

After her graduation, we had lunch at a Chinese place. It was good, but I quickly learned that Cheryl’s family is a lot like a Jewish family. ;) If I ate too quickly, more food kept getting put on my plate and if I didn’t eat, I wasn’t eating enough. Apparently, I look too skinny and should eat more.

After an interesting train ride back to the city, Cheryl and I finally departed at central train station. I must admit I was getting choked up and teary-eyed saying good-bye to my best friend. I'm going to miss her. The walk to the bus stop seemed longer than normal.

While on the bus, I had an awful experience because this lady in her 60’s kept gawking at me, pointing, talking to other people about me, and then she had the gawl to whip out her mobile and take pics of me and showed it to people on the bus! I was absolutely appalled and wanted to say something nasty but I held my tongue. Instead, I told her that she was being very rude and asked her to stop it, but she didn’t seem to care. Geez! I was so glad to get off that bus!

Brrr, I look like a horse in my new winter coat!
--Buster

Bula!

Bula! (Fijian for hello or cheers.) I’m officially back from my seven day trip in Fiji. It was absolutely fantastic! We spent 3 nights at the Club Fiji resort in our own private ocean view bure (cottage). At Club Fiji, we lazed around in hammocks, beach chairs, read our books and magazines, and collected shells. We even found 2 tiny sand dollars. We also went swimming in the resort pool and let loose at the pub at night. I had a Club Fiji Sunset and even a Panty dropper, a shooter in a test tube! While at Club Fiji we visited the Nadi market, Naditown, the grocery store, and went to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, a natural tropical rainforest with 1000’s of orchids. From Club Fiji we took a boat to Beachcomber Island where we spent 3 nights, a popular and lively place for young people. At Beachcomber Island we snorkelled, swam, soaked up some rays, and even kayaked to another island called Treasure Island. One could walk around the entire island in 10 minutes. The evenings were filled with authentic Fijian dancing, drinks, food, games, star gazing, and late night chats in the gran bure dorm. It was definitely a great way to recharge our batteries!

Also, see my latest yahoo pic album.

I finally finished final exams! These past few weeks have been dominated by midterms, quizzes, and papers. I have now learned to survive with only 5 hours of sleep and still attend classes. Coffee and diet coke with lime and vanilla are my new addictions now. Due to my hectic schedule, I have even resorted to dropping my dirty clothes off at a laundry mat and picking them up clean and folded at the end of the day, but without my undergarments as I couldn’t bear the idea of those being touched by strangers! I know, I’m weird. I did manage to see Cheryl this weekend and we had crepes for lunch at a cute Thai pastry diner. We also went to a movie, but ended up walking out b/c it wasn’t what we were expecting—was a heavy philosophical/scientific commentary waaaaaaaaay over our heads. Today, I lodged an application to take my final exams in June (so formal I know), and I will be taking 7 final exams!! Oy vey!! Also, I can’t stand people who are obvious about their dislike for Americans. Yea sure, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but it’s one thing not to like us and not say anything, but to be obvious about it is just plain rude! I can’t help it if I have the privilege of being born and raised in the best country in the world! :)

I had a nice productive weekend. This semester, I’m taking professional practice 2, genetics & biometry, animal digestion & nutrition, and veterinary anatomy and physiology 2A. I’m enjoying it, but my days are very long and tiring. I did have fun on the weekend though! I rode a mechanical bull at the annual vet society keg party. I managed to stay on for about 20 seconds or so! I also went on a blind date last Saturday—was interesting. Don’t know if there will be a 2nd one, but still had a nice time chatting. :)

I’m finally on the mend—thank goodness. I pity anyone who ever has to suffer the flu and highly recommend getting the flu shot for preventive purposes. I still have a lingering cough though, but I’ll be alright. I’ve been trying to take it easy and rest all week. The most exciting thing that happened all week was when maintenance installed water saving devices in my sinks and showers. I was so embarrassed because I had no idea that they were going to be in my bathroom where I had several pairs of underwear hanging up in the shower! On the bright side, I’m saving water, but now there’s hardly any water pressure. My first day of school starts tomorrow—woo hoo! I’m excited and ready to go back because my brain is started to turn to mush or maybe that’s from all the drugs I’ve been taking--just kidding. ;)

I’m sick—ugh. Feel like I’m going to die. Went to the Dr. today and turns out that I’ve got the flu and I’ve been walking around with a 104 temp! On some flu prescription drugs and some fever reducers. Was a hassle though because I had to go to 6 different chemists before I found one that had it in stock. Turns out, that no one carries it because it is so expensive here. I nearly cried when I reached the 5th chemist and they didn’t have any because by that time, I was feeling even worse and could barely walk. I told her how desperate I was…so, she called a bunch of chemists in Sydney and found one that had one left in stock at the Broadway shopping centre. With drugs in hand, I haled a taxi back to the village and to my dismay, I got into a cab with a driver who did not know his way around Sydney or even back to the school! Fourteen dollars later (a cab fare that normally costs 7 dollars), I navigated him out of Broadway and towards the village. He even missed the turn at the village! What a day.

<img border='0' style='border:1px solid #000000; Went to Sydney Harbour, the Rocks, and a pub in the evening. While I was at the harbour, a Qantas passenger recognised Buster and I from our flight and said hello! Also had an interesting conversation with an Australian fellow about dogs and deafness. The highlight of the weekend was when Cheryl and I went to a Koala park sanctuary on Sunday in Castle Hill. We were able to pat and get photo ops with the cute little koalas. The koalas lead quite a lazy life sleeping 18-19 hours a day! We also had a blast feeding the kangaroos, wallabies, and wallaroos. And, to my surprise, the treats that we fed them were cinnamon cheerios. (I verified this by sampling them—mmm…tasty!) We topped off the evening by sharing an expired ham sandwich and attending mass in Castle Hill. It was a pleasant weekend.

Street sign in Needville, TX.

Well, I’m officially back in Sydney. Got back yesterday morning with no problems! Breezed through customs and quarantine. (Buster will not have to be quarantined this time because he has Australian residency…woo hoo!) The only mishap was when I accidentally shut Buster’s tail in the lavatory door. (He’s ok though.) Buster and I had a nice flight with plenty of leg room and got tons of attention from the flight attendants. They came and chatted with us on several occasions. They even gave us a free bottle of wine at the end of the flight! Turns out, one of them has a deaf sister and another had a family of deaf in-laws whose last name was also “Walker!”

Grooming young Brahman show bull

Well, I leave for Sydney in 8 days! My summer break here in Texas sure has flown by! It’s been hectic, but fun! In January, I spent a week working at dairy farm in La Grange. Had a fantastic experience milking cows, bottle feeding calves, and witnessed a calving! I also worked at a chicken farm and a Braham cattle ranch in Boling during February. I’ve never seen so many chickens and eggs in my entire life! One of the houses that I worked in houses 240,000 chickens! Learned how to trim beaks and do blood draws. At the Brahman ranch, I’ve learned a lot about the wonders of breeding and surrogacy. It’s pretty strange when you see a big black Angus Mom with a baby that is a pure-bred Brahman calf! At the cattle place, I spend most of my time grooming prized show bulls, heifers, and cows to get them ready for the Houston livestock show. I’ve grown attached to 1 particular heifer. When I enquired about her cost, I can own half of her for a mere $30,000. I also discovered that this small quiet country town of Boling has 2 nudist communities. (I saw the signs, but didn’t see anything though.) On the weekends, I’ve been working with an Arabian horse breeder. These horses are incredible and fun to watch. They all have unique personalities. One horse is a liar and another horse, a stallion, loves to play with traffic cones and barrels!
